changing screen a document displays on when using dual monitors

I just started using dual monitors (my MacBook laptop screen and a larger monitor attached to my MacBook via HDMI. I have my email displayed on the larger monitor screen. However, when I click on a document in my email to open it, the document opens up on the smaller laptop screen. I want the documents I open in email to stay on the same larger monitor. Is there a way to set this up, or do I have to drag it back to the larger monitor every time? Thank you!
