How doI select which programs- Photos, Mail, etc. - to open automatically at startup?

Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the Login Items button at the top right. Use the Add [+] button to add items to the list or drag the items into the listbox.
Understand that this will slow down the startup because the system will need to launch each item in the list.
