When I try to drag them out, it does NOT work, I have tried previously making sure that the application that I wanted to remove was not running, nor open, but I am still unable to do this. Every time I try to remove the application that I want, it does nothing.

Hmmm. That's not right. You could try deleting ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist then restart or type "killall Dock" (without quotes) in the Terminal.

Try right/control clicking on the icon and choose Options > Remove From Dock.
Helpful, but the only options that I have are Open at Login and Show in Finder
