You should be able to use your Photos Library in the screensaver, if you enable the Photos Library as your System Photo Library. And if the library is on a suitable volume.

  • To make the library your System Photo Library open Photos, the go to Photos > Preferences > General.
  • Then click "Use as System Photo Library", if it is not greyed out.

Then Relaunch Photos and System Preferences and try again.

To use the Photos Library,

  • open "System Preferences > Desktop&Screensaver",
  • click a Slideshow screensaver template in the left pane
  • click "Source" in the right pane and scroll down to "Photo Library".
  • Wait (it can take several minutes) for your Photos library to appear and to show the albums inside.
  • Select the album you want to use.

You can only use photos, that have been downloaded from iCloud, if your library is an iCloud Photos Library.
