"advanced tools" in iMovie 10.1.16 preferences

To make the Picture in Picture tool show up in the tool bar at the upper right of your screen, you need first to place a clip in the upper timeline above another clip, and then select the upper clip by clicking on it. That will make the overlap icon appear in the tool bar. It looks like over lapping squares. Click on that and a little box will appear below and to the left of the icon where you can choose Picture in Picture.

iMovie 10 does not have an "advanced tools" category. You access iMovie 10 features from the toolbar at the upper right of the screen, the iMovie menu bar, the settings button above the timeline at the right of the screen, and from various Control-click drop down menus.

There are some tools that do not appear above the Viewer until you do certain things in the timeline.

An example is the Video Overlay Settings tools which do not appear until you insert a clip above the clips in the timeline.
