I purchased a macbook air thinking I would be able to purchase an adapter to connect my thunderbolt monitor. What do I need, or is this even possible?

Can I connect my older Thunderbolt 2 display to my macbook air? If yes, will the USB ports on the display monitor function? What adapter is needed?
