desktop icons don't stay in places in the grid where they are dropped

Did you set the View Options to turn off the auto arrangement. You can even turn off snapping to grid.

I don't know why it would snap to some odd location.

I don't use the Desktop at all, and I let it auto-arrange, so I haven't seen that particular problem.

Hello, I had this same problem. All you do is right click on the desktop and untick the "use stacks" option and that should unlock the auto allocation of icons
