Connect new mac Mini to old iMac

So can I use the Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter to connect a new Mac Mini with a 2012 iMac I want to use as a monitor? I just need to add a short connector cord between the Thunderbolt port on the iMac and the female port on this adapter? Thanks.

Not if its the 2020 M1 Mac mini. The Intel Mac mini will work because it's a 2018 model.
