Unknowingly bought a Locked IPhone 11

The guy that sold it to me was a friend for over 20 years. I trusted him but he sold me a phone that I can't use. It's an IPHone 11 on AT&T, it's locked and unpaid for.

What are my options? Am I just out of $350?

So your saying this was financed through AT&T, hence the carrier lock, and there is still a balance owed to AT&T? In that case there is nothing you can do if your friend isn’t willing to pay it off. Legally, he is the one AT&T will go after for the balance of the finance offer through them. But if he walks away from that debt, they’ll just blacklist the phone, rendering it useless to anyone and everyone.
