big sur update asking for target disk mode?

Help please!

Macbook decided to update earlier, didn’t check how much storage I have before.

Halfway through updating (around 10 mins remaining) it cuts to ‘An error occurred preparing the software update’.

I press okay then it takes me to ‘Choose start up disk’.

Restart button is grey and gives option for Target disk mode?

I am working from home at the moment and need my laptop for tomorrow morning!

Would be grateful for any help!

thank you! :-)

Hello nataliedcd31,

Thank you for posting in Apple Support Communities.

Let’s work together and see if can find out what’s causing this behavior. Which Mac do you have? We want to make sure we give you right steps. Does it have the Intel or M1 processor?

Do you have FileVault enabled? You didn’t mention, have you tried to reinstall the macOS? If needed, see How to reinstall macOS.

Let us know more details about what’s happening, and we’ll do all we can to help.

Take care!
