Mac OS Big Sur and Canon MG5520

I am running a 2019 iMac, and I am able to print on my Canon MG5520; however, the included scanner does not work at all. In Photoshop when I try to Import or when I open Image Capture, my device (printer) is greyed out.

Canon suggests that I download the IJ Scan Utility, but when I try to launch it, I get the error message, "A scanner driver supporting this software is not installed. Install it and try again. Code: 15,230,0".

How do I get the scanner to work on my Mac? (I have a Canon MG3329?

Thanks,

Colin Hartridge

Hey there!

Did you happen to download the available drivers for this printer/scanner from Canon?:

https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/details/printers/inkjet-multifunction/mg-series-inkjet/mg5520?subtab=downloads-firmware

Including the software and firmware they provide. I believe this should get it to work!

Otherwise, I’d check the specs of the scanner, if wireless (Or not), sometimes resetting the printing system and re-adding it is a good step:

https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/reset-mac-printing-system-solve-a-problem-mh14001/mac

But I may first check out this article from Apple:

Hope it works out!

Hey again! No worries. No resetting the printing system won’t update the print/scan software, it usually clears old settings that may prevent print/scan from working, (They typically come hand in hand).

I know you’re Mac is printing just fine, but not scanning, if the Mac appears to be working normally and recognizes your Canon device, as printing seems to prove, my guess is there is other software from Canon that’s needed to make it work, or the requirements for both don’t work together, which usually software attempts to fix.

Another valid question is, are you using the printing software that it came with? If so, you can try Image Capture in your Applications folder, if it works there, then it proves an issue with their software, not your Mac, if not:

You can test it on another admin user on your Mac, or using Safe Mode, and/or even, is connected wirelessly, on another network, (Although we know it already picks up the printer, so this would seem fruitless).

But you never know, I’ve seen many strange bugs over the years. Let me know how it goes, will help if I can!

Thanks for your assistance, DiZoE! Yeah, I've tried scanning with Image Capture as well as Photoshop to no avail, and I've tried downloading Canon software only to receive error messages. Oh well, I shall have to resign myself to the fact that I no longer have a scanner, and I will just have to do with taking iPhone photos of the items I wanted to scan! Thanks again, though.
