Apple Watch apps in family member setup

Is it true that with an Apple watch in family member setup (for a child) apps which require an iPhone (like Spotify for example) can't be used? I have an older iPhone which I set up using my sons Apple ID, but even with an iPhone set up with the same Apple ID as the watch, I couldn't get any apps which require an iPhone running on the Apple watch. Am I doing something wrong?

Yes there are limitations, meaning some Apple Watch features depend on having a companion iPhone, and aren't available on an Apple Watch that you pair using Family Setup.
