Mac Mail stuck moving messages

Getting this problem consistently. Mail spends hours stuck in "moving messages". Goes in and out of Not Responding in Activity Monitor. Memory burgeons to 1.4GB - then when things free-up the memory collapses back to about 400MB. Lot of Disk Activity in Activity Monitor. Mail and / or mds_stores reading continuously , GB of data - looks like indexing activity (?). Then finally - things free up - for no apparent rhyme or reason and various message streams start flowing.......... Until the next time.... Getting to be unuseable.

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

If you have no POP accounts & they’re all IMAP accounts then in Mail’s Mailbox menu choose Rebuild.
