I was just going to look up something on my phone, as one does- but just searching "I" it says that the connection is not private. is there a way to fix this?

Sounds like you are connected to a public, unprotected Wi-Fi network. Disconnect and just use cellular (or secured Wi-Fi if available) if this bothers you.
