I have a new iMac 24 and I’m trying to use an old iMac (late 2012) as a second display. Thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolts 3 with adapter. Both thunderbolts are active. The arrangement is not showing up on display so I can get second screen to work. Help

No problem, you’re welcome.
If you want or need a second display for your new M1, then your best bet is to get a display that supports USB-C or HDMI input.
