Safari tabs keep saying, This webpage is using significant memory.

I'm not sure why but my Mac has gone extremely slow with the Safari browser. I've cleared the cache, cleared the history, and yet it still doing the same. I've reduced the number of tabs I open and it still returns the same message. The tabs keep reloading, even the basic Gmail pages. I used to be able to open multiple tabs with no issues but this has been happening since this morning. Urgent assistant required.
