Can I delete songs from my iPod Classic on a MacBook Air 2014 running Big Sur 11.5.2?

I began to use the iPod Classic in my car and I have connected it to my computer for the first time in forever. Everything is a little odd now that iTunes is history, but I found that I could still add content to the device simply by dragging the songs to the iPod. Easy peasy. But I can't figure out a way to delete any of the content that I don't want. The entire "Song" dropdown is greyed out. Selecting an item highlights it, but right-clicking does nothing.

Finder > select device > tap the Manage Storage... button. This button only appears for a manually managed device. If you set up syncing then you manage what goes on, and comes off, by adjusting the sync selections or modifying the synced playlists.
