Can someone help with this question, i have Sierra or high Sierra on my time machine back up storage device, with all my backed up files, now my question is if i try to install my back up on to a newer iMac will it just ignore my old OS on time machine back up and install my files with the new OS on the newer mac?

many thanks

If you use Migration Assistant to transfer data, you'll have several options. One is to use the TimeMachine. The assistant should simply ignore the OS on the TM drive as its purpose to transfer data, not install an OS.
