Why cant i buy applecare for my iwatch 6 series

I received the watch as a Christmas gift, so the warranty expires on January 22nd. I want to buy AppleCare but when I type in the serial number, my watch isn’t eligible? Not quite sure I understand why.

Apple Watch Series 6, watchOS 7

AppleCare plus would need to be purchased within the first 60 days of ownership.
