File/folder grouping

Since upgrading to Big Sur when I go into finder and look to group by name or kind it no longer lists the folders/files in the same way.

When I used to group by kind I would have all the folders first listed in alphabetical order and I knew where everything was. Now folders are still listed first but the order is somewhat random - seems to be an element of last modified in the order which really slows down searching.

Help much appreciated.

Do you have Sort set along with your Grouping?

You can sort within the groups. You can access the Sort by holding down the option key and clicking the button, or see both in View Options.
