Unable to use gift card
My son (14) is unable to use his Apple gift card even after I removed him from family sharing. It just keeps asking for a credit card even though he has more than enough balance to cover the purchase.

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities! It seems your son is being prompted to associate a payment method with his Apple ID to make a purchase, even when having sufficient Apple ID balance for the purchase.
It sounds like a payment method is needed to be associated with his Apple ID to allow downloads. Check out the information in the following article:

"You might need to have a payment method on file, even if the app that you want to download is free. See what payment method you have on file and make sure that it isn't expired, declined, or failed."
