Updates to the iOS should not cause any loss, but the safest option is to back up your iPod (data only) before any update.

The music in your iTunes Library (and therefore on your computer) needs to be backed up in case your computer fails. An iPod is not a suitable backup.
If your iPod is using iOS 6.1.6, that suggests that it may be a 4th generation model. However, iTunes will confirm whether or not there are any iOS updates available for that specific iPod.

I'm adding to my question above: if I update my 5th generation iPod will it delete my personal, non-purchased music. I have about 12400 songs on my iPod; most are not from Apple.
