The gmail and AOL mail apps support Push, where content is updated in real time. Neither supports push using the built in app. Other than that its a matter of personal preference, whether you want all of your mail in one place or not. You can even do both, if you want; that is have the gmail/AOL app AND add the accounts to the mail app.
