The Time Machine backup just shows a stack of Finder windows. I have read a lot of posts about this but none can get me past this problem.

After trying for hours to work out how Time Machine works I think I finally got a backup onto my USB drive. I’m baffled by the restore interface so I think I’ll just keep doing my critical work on my Windows laptop and use my MacBook Pro for surfing and email. I have to admit the Mac has nice graphics though.
I ticked the box in Time Machine to show ‘backup now’ but it isn’t showing in the menu bar. Any suggestions on how to run a backup?
