How do I know when the backup is complete? Where do I find the time machine menu?

To show Time Machine in the menu bar, go to Apple menu > System Preferences > Time Machine and put a check mark in "Show Time Machine in menu bar."

If Time Machine is in the menu bar, there is a very small difference in the menu bar icon when it is backing up (a tiny arrow at the 3 o'clock position on the circular arrow in the icon). That goes away when the backup is completed. You can also click on the menu bar icon to get the status or go to Apple menu > System Preferences > Time Machine to see the status.
