iCloud sync problem

I get the The document “xxx” could not be opened. Pages cannot open files in the “iCloud synchronization file” format. error message now that I have upgraded my computer to an iMac. I have followed all the sync advice and logging in/out etc multiple times, so I'm guessing this is a known Mac problem. Hopefully someone has the solution.
