thanks a lot I was going to rollback to Monterey as I use my Mac for media streaming and it was perfectly fine with Monterey. With Ventura my server stopped working every time the screen went to sleep and I had to go back from the living room to the Mac and wake it up to be able to watch a movie. this new setting panel is a total mess

Now this is interesting. I was about to post a different question but maybe this is the answer. I had been wondering where this option was but left it for another day. I just recently upgraded to Ventura, 13.0.1.

Under Monterey and before, my 2017 iMac would go into a "deep sleep" when left alone for quite some time. Under Ventura, that does not appear to be happening but I now see that this option is defaulted "on."

The reason this is an issue is that I am a johnny-come-lately to two things - leaving my Mac on all night and Time Machine. I used to shut my machine off at night out of security concerns but with Monterey, I started leaving it on at night. I had read several articles that Apple prefers that, and based on (poor) boot-up performance, I believe it. But I had a long-standing concern related to a hacking incident that happened a very long time ago.

Anyway, accessing it in the morning with Monterey, I got the long wait for my password request, indicative of a "deep sleep." That is no longer happening with Ventura, which concerns me.

In addition, I started using TM in Monterey - backups were done manually before. Well, TM does things all night. That did not seem to be a problem with sleep in Monterey but I was beginning to wonder about Ventura.

So, I am guessing now, based on your answer here, that defaulting this option to "keep the hard drive going" is the reason I am seeing Ventura's sleep behavior (in the morning, the password request dialog box in Ventura comes up immediately)? I guess I will turn this feature off and see what happens tonight. Thanks.

Thank you dialabrain!

Why did they move it? System settings turned into a horrible jumble on Ventura. Search doesn't even turn up this feature. It feels like an implementation detail leaked through and they just tossed it into the Display settings config.

I just got back after being away for 2 hrs and expected the backup to have been completed. It was not.

On power, heavy disk activity during a backup, went to sleep. Arggg!
