Apple TV

since I replaced a non working modem that the Apple TV was connected to with a “gateway”, do I have to additionally connect the Ethernet cable?

The Apple TV box wants to connect to either ethernet or Wi-Fi — not both. If anything is plugged into the ethernet port, then Wi-Fi is de-activated for the Apple TV. Either choice can work well.


Your overview of you home network is a bit thin on information. Can you elaborate?

There are networks where all network devices are wireless. There are networks where all is wired. And various mixed states with extenders wired and wireless. There are a lot of different setups possible.


For consumer use, a lot of modems are also gateway and router.

For consumer use, a lot of gateways devices are also modem and router.

For consumer use, a lot of routers are also modem and gateway.

For consumer use, many of these also feature as a wireless access point.

All-in-one devices can easily be the attractive default offer. The feature list is more important than the naming.
