Microsoft generally supports the three most recent versions of macOS.

You’ll want to run the newest version supported by that Mac.

Whether that’s new enough for Microsoft?

Have a backup before upgrading, too.

If you can’t get upgraded, you’ll be looking for an alternative, Apple iWork Numbers, or LibreOffice, etc

Or a newer Mac..
