Can't eject a thumb drive from the side port. tutorials refer to an identifying icon on the desktop. I find nothing to right click/eject.

It can happen. If you're really uncomfortable, it's always safe to remove after powering down. I've had cases where a USB device (like an iPad) either wouldn't eject or didn't show up.

Open Finder and click the little Up pointing triangle to the right of the drive. That will eject it.
You can also open Disk Utilities and eject there.
