I pushed the slider to a point where the slider is not visible at all any more and I can't operate it.
in fact, quite a number of such items are not visible any more in system settings. colours are also over-saturated.
even bringing down the screen's brightness does not reveal the slider.
how do I fix this, please?

also: is there a way to all reset system settings to default? no. not reset mac to factory settings. reset system settings.
Click Appearance, and choose Dark.
Go back to the Accessibility->Display pane and you will see the slider well enough to drag.

I could not find Contrast Display slider on normal appearance you are a lifesaver I changed it to DARK this is all done in System Settings under Appearance to "Dark" then go back to Display contrast slider was on MAX despite guessing with cursor Dark mode easy find back to Display (Screen) Contrast SLIDER to Normal THANK YOU!

Try booting into Safe Mode then restart normally. Sometimes that will fix anomalies.
