Using High Sierra 10.13.6 on IMAC approximately 2007 model. Can I update ?

My IMAC is old but works effectively ( purchased approximately 2007 or 2008) I recently purchased a new Magic Mouse . Since then , cannot us the side number pad on my keyboard, only the numbers at the top of the keyboard. I assume this might be because I need to update my operating system . Can anyone tell me if this may be the cause of not being able to use numbers pad , and is there a system I can update too. I am not very tech savvy , and what I am reading , much of it goes over my head. I would appreciate any advise.

There is some software that runs on High Sierra, and that might help you extend the useful life of your system.

Free Software and/or Open Source Software

The Firefox Web browser. You can't update Safari without upgrading to a newer version of macOS, but the High Sierra version of Firefox still receives updates on a regular basis. Some Web sites that complain about the High Sierra version of Safari being outdated and unsupported may work better with Firefox.

LibreOffice – a Free and Open Source office suite. Version 7.4.7 will run on High Sierra, although newer versions won't. Version 7.4.7 is currently featured prominently on the downloads page, but might soon rotate off into the archive (see link at bottom of downloads page).

GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) – a Free & Open Source Image Editor.

If you're into working with Raw files from digital cameras, there are a couple of applications called darktable and RawTherapee that may be of interest.

Commercial Software

The Pages, Numbers, and Keynote programs that came with your Mac are useful for a lot of things.

iTunes 12.8 for High Sierra is recent enough to let you make purchases from the iTunes Store, and/or subscribe to Apple Music. Also useful if you just want to import and play music from your own CDs.

GraphicConverter 12 still runs on High SIerra. Usually when people mention it, they say good things about it. You can get it from the developer's Web site or from the Mac App Store, but the developer says that the Mac App Store has some feature restrictions due to Apple's sandboxing rules.

Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper! are widely-used backup programs. I believe that Carbon Copy Cloner 5 runs on High Sierra and that the current version of SuperDuper! does as well.

MacTracker is a free application that will tell you lots of detail on just about every Mac, iPhone, iPad, and iPod which Apple ever made. The Mac version (which runs on High Sierra) is available from the developer's site or from the Mac App Store, and there is also an iOS/iPadOS version that runs on the iPhone and iPad.

High Sierra can't run the current versions of Microsoft Office / 365, Adobe Photoshop / Lightroom / Lightroom Classic, Affinity Photo, or Amazon's Kindle (for Mac) app.

Hi there!

You cannot use macOS High Sierra on a 2007 or 2008 iMac model. macOS High Sierra requires a 2009 or later model iMac.

What version of macOS are you currently using, and what is the exact year? The simplest way to find out is About This Mac, available by choosing About This Mac from the Apple menu  in the upper-left corner of your screen.
