Advanced data protection

Can your “trusted contact” for data recovery also access your data at will? What level of access do they have at any given time and how does this person access your data if you forget how to?

No.

None, and they don’t and can’t.

The Recovery Contact is someone you can request Apple send a verification code to for two-factor authentication when you need that code and can’t get it on one of your own trusted devices. Nothing more.

iCloud Advanced Data Protection is not particularly related to the Recovery Contact (or the Security Keys mechanism), other than as a means to regain access to the Apple ID when no trusted devices are available or the password forgotten: The user must set up at least one alternative recovery method—one or more recovery contacts or a recovery key—which they can use to recover their iCloud data if they lose access to their account.
