Which one is better or more effective way to block an iPhone?

Hi, yesterday a friend of mine phone was stolen. She went to the carrier and do a IMEI block. Looking at the iCloud (findmyphone) her phone was gone from her devices, so she cant erase her data. Today she got a notification that the thieves tried to stole her bank accounts but couldn't.

Which way of blocking is more effective IMEI or thru icloud? Is there a way to get to erase all data ?

Thnks

The ideal method is through Find My, but the thief appears to have been one step ahead. I'm slightly puzzled because the thief would have needed the device to be active so the online banking functions could be used - but it was already gone from Apple ID. Strange...

PRIORITY is to CHANGE THE APPLE ID PASSWORD. If she has another trusted device this can be done from the Settings app on the device. Otherwise go online to the Apple ID web pages

It is still worth monitoring the iCloud/Apple ID web pages just in case the stolen device reappears. The best action will be to Lock or mark it stolen, Erase if you wish but DO NOT delete from the account because that will release it from Activation Lock. Holding the lock alive means the thief is very limited in their ability.
