Not able to add desktop widgets in macOS

I am running macOS Ventura version 13.6 on my MacBook Pro M1 and wanted to add some widgets to my desktop.

If I right-click on the desktop, however, I do not see the option 'Edit widgets'. Trying to add desktop widgets from the Notification Center does not work either.

Anybody any suggestions?

Thanks!
