Mac target display

How do I use an older iMac - model A1418 as a display/monitor for a laptop/pc? Is there a specific cable needed?? Thunderbolt to HDMI??

iMac do not support input from other devices in that respect.


There were only a few models that supported or could use a supported iMac in Target Display Mode.

Even when Target Display Mode was new, Apple never intended, supported, nor documented it for use with non-Apple device. End users accidentally discovered that SOME (not all) 2009-2010 iMac 27" models would support some non-Apple devices with mini-display ports, but no other models ever did.


If you spent money based because a sales person told you in 2023 that TDM was still a going concern, you need to chat up his manager.


Apple started the deprecation of Target Display Mode in late 2014 and threw the last shovel of dirt in its face in early 2020:
