Hi all wondering if you could help. I have a studio display. My partner has a Lenovo laptop with HDMI which she would like to plug into the screen as a second screen. a USB-c to HDMI converter does not work and I cannot figure out how we can get around it. Do I need a specific adapter?

that statement is correct by definition, because the speed of the interface is too high to support adapters. For a real HDMI Display at 5K and above, producing a reliable HDMI signal using an adapter is also not possible.
In addition, almost all USB-C/HDMI adapters require USB-C on the computer-end, and produce HDMI on the display-end. When connected the other way around, they do NOTHING.

Even if you found a HDMI (computer) to USB-C (monitor) adapter – which seems unlikely – it wouldn't produce a Thunderbolt signal.
Just a USB-C (DisplayPort) one, which for the 27" Apple 5K Studio Display would not be good enough.
Studio display only works with a Thunderbolt connection.
