More space after migration?

Just migrated (via USB direct cable and Migration Assistant) from an M1 MacBook Air to an M3 MacBook Air. Same 512GB hard drive on each machine, but the M3 shows roughly 20 more GB free space.

Any explanation? (I got only one advisory in the migration—that a Google Drive folder hadn’t migrated, but that folder is 0 KB on the M1 Mac, so that doesn’t account for it.)

Mac internal storage My M1 Mac 1Tb HD had 850Gb of data stored on it. To create room I have moved the 380Gb PhotoLibrary to an external SSD. After the move I now have 828Gb of data on the drive. So I moved 338Gb and saved only 22Gb of space. I wonder what has taken its place? I note that other users are occupying 310Gb. On checking their individual data they only seem to have 48Gb. Why the large difference?

Hi there!

As long as your files and apps migrated, your new Mac should be fine! It's possible that 20GB is older Library content, system caches, and Time Machine snapshots.
