How do i rename/nickname devices in find my?

I keep seeing answers like: "you don't name/rename your device in Find My, you name it on the device." Well I have already done that but the names do not show up in Find My – in Find My, all I see is iPhone, iPhone (2) iPhone (2) and there is no info listed for me to be able to distinguish which one we're talking about. Yes there are literally two entries called "iPhone (2)"
