Solution to iPhone not connecting with 5GHz WiFi

Hi,

I have an iPhone 16 Pro Max on the latest IOS and have had persistent inability to connect to my WiFi router’s 5GHz network. My prior iPhone 13 Pro Max was fine with this router / network and my partner’s iPhone 12 and mum’s iPhone all connect perfectly fine. Having read various discussions online I see suggestions that this is a router issue (e.g. channels etc) and there has been push back / denial this is an iPhone related issue. After hours of playing around with various suggestions including router settings etc etc I tried the following:

  1. Went to the Passwords App on one of the iPhones that connects perfectly fine.
  2. Selected WiFi and located the relevant 5GHz network.
  3. Clicked ‘Show Network QR Code’
  4. Scanned the QR code with the iPhone that would not connect.

Miraculously, the iPhone with the issue connecting then instantly connects and works perfectly fine.

Doesn’t this prove it is an Apple / iPhone issue, rather than a router issuer? Nothing was changed on the router in the process / steps above.

Apple needs to take this issue seriously and investigate it thoroughly as it appears to be their issue not an issue with their customers’ routers and network settings.

Please share your thoughts.

Thank you.

To me that indicates that the Password used on the device that was unable to connect was wrong. Not sure if you entered this manually or one stored on that devices Passwords app or restored from the iCloud Keychain. The Show Network QR Code on a connected device includes the SSID and Password used without having to enter it manually or from a previously stored password.

Resetting Network Setting on the device that is unable to connect is a good way to clear out any previous WiFi passwords that may have been stored there.

Many thanks for your thoughts but the issue was that the 5GHz network SSID was simply not appearing - so not even able to get to the point of entering a password, which in any event if had been able to do would have been entered correctly.
  • Did you try to enter the SSID manually? In that case you enter the SSID and Password at the same time. Alternately, the Scan QR code option will use both the SSID and Password from a connected device.
  • Is your router set to hide the SSID? They will still appear on a device that had previously connected.

I'm not sure this proves what you think it does. While many routers offer 4GHz and 5GHz bands, its typically up to the user to choose the band they want to connect to. And that means naming the bands separately, so the user can see the two bands and then choose which one they want to connect to. What you would want to do is to have named each band to something such as: "Home_Network-2.4GHz" and "Home_Network-5GHz." This is not done automatically.

Thanks Mac Jim ID - I have tried both, but the only thing that works is the scan QR code option.

Router configuration is not set to hide the SSID - also checked that of course but sadly not the problem.

I am just pleased I found a solution via the QR code generation on a connected iPhone. There is a lot of discussion online about this issue and iPhones not ‘seeing’ or losing sight of 5GHz networks when previously they were fine so I hope sharing this workaround helps the many people also experiencing the problem.
