Download button missing from Safari—and there's no way to add it.

Sometime recently, after a computer update, I lost the download button in Safari. I am running Tahoe 26.0.1 and Safari 26.0.1. The download button does not appear in the "Customize Toolbar" window. The "Show Downloads" option in the View menu is grayed out. And yes, I have downloads set to be "Manually" removed from the list.

The download icon in the toolbar (which is really the Show Downloads icon) only shows when you have downloaded something. The fact that the menu View > Show Downloads is grayed out confirms it.


Try to download something new to confirm.

It disappeared for as long as I can remember in previous versions of Safari/macOS. (I'm currently on Safari 26.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.7.2.)


On my end, the icon shows up only for some types of downloads, it shows for instance when I download an application (outside the App Store). But it doesn't show if I download a PDF displayed in a Safari window/tab using the displayed toolbar (see below):
