iphone syncing to itunes to backup on desktop

My kids have 2 iphones that were set up from a Mac that we no longer have access to.

I connected their phones to my Mac and opened Itunes, wanting to back up the phones on the desktop device

My itunes only gives me the option of setting it up as a new phone or restoring it. there is no option to back up the phones

They are all set up in my family

What am i missing?

You see those choices because the iPhone(s) has/have not seen this computer before. You may choose set up as new, as that will not destroy any information on the iPhone(s).

But be very careful. Each of your children should have her/his own Apple ID, regardless of their age.

And once each child has her/his own Apple ID, their iPhone should be thoroughly cleansed, so only her/his own information is on the iPhone.

If appropriate and if you wish, you may set up Family Sharing.

But when backing up each iPhone to iTunes, each Apple ID should be backed up using iTunes in a different user account on the Mac.
