I have an Airport network with a TimeCapsule as the primary base station and 3 other Airports added to extend the network. The primary Time Capsule base station is starting to have problems and needs to be replaced. Is it possible to just replace the Time Capsule base station with another Airport extreme, or do I need to create a completely new network with the new Airport Extreme as the new base station?

You can just replace the TC.. and Apple provides that function in the airport utility.
At the first screen select Other Options down on the bottom left.
Then select replace.
It will pickup all the values it can from the existing TC.. and apply those to the AE.. then reset the TC to factory.
You might need to reboot the extenders but it also could manage to work without doing any disruption.

Should I disconnect the internet from the TimeCapsule and connect it to my new Airport Extreme first, or do I leave it connected to the TimeCapsule when I do the steps above.

I did what you said and it worked great!!!! Thank you very very much for your help. This was MUCH easier than I anticipated thanks to your help.
It has to be done with the previous unit in place.. glad you worked it out.. and yes.. very easy when you see the screenshots.
