It sounds like the app you want isn't compatible with your version of OS X.

What year/model Mac do you have according to the  menu / About This Mac on the top-left corner of the screen?

If you MacBook Pro is a Mid 2010 or newer you would be able to upgrade. Otherwise, you will not be able to upgrade to a newer OS X / macOS. Only then could you run that app.

Ok great, you can definitely upgrade to the latest macOS Mojave and will be able to use the new macOS Catalina that comes out this Fall.

You can read this page and then click to get Mojave from the App Store:

If you use Time Machine backup w/ an external USB drive it's always advised to make a backup first before upgrading (although most people don't, I imagine):

Microsoft's current support policy for Office 2016 for Mac, Office 2019 for Mac, and Office365 subscriptions is the current release of macOS and the two previous major versions. Thus, until Catalina ships this Fall, the oldest supported operating system is presently Sierra 10.12, and the aforementioned Office releases will refuse to install on your El Capitan installation.
