Photos for Mac

I dont understand Photos for Mac at all! I've tried reading through other online questions and answers and everyone seems to overcomplicate things.

How can I just simply organise my photos like on a windows? Where are the original files? Are my photos already automatically imported in the photos library tab or do I need to import them?

Why do I need to pay for iCloud space when my laptop already has over 500gb of space.....its like some kind of scam! If someone could give me a simple answer or direct me somewhere where I can easily do more research and figure this out that would be great.

MacBook Air 13", macOS 10.13

The Photos.app does not need iCloud Photos. You can use it on a computer or iPhone without using iCloud at all. iCloud Photos is just nice to keep the Photos Libraries on all devices in sync and identical. If you are using iCloud Photos, any changes (adding adjustments to a photo, deleting photos, importing photos, creating albums) will automatically update on all devices.

What Photos is to be used for: It is a photo manager. Photos is managing a database of photos, the Photos Library. The Photos Library will contain all photos you import to Photos. The relational database of the photos Library is keeping track of the relations between the different versions of a photo, if you add adjustments or add it to albums. Photos is working lossless. Whenever you apply adjustments, Photos will create a new version and keep the original, so you can always revert individual adjustments.

The original files are stored inside the Photos Library (or in iCloud, if you are using iCloud Photos Library). If you want to use an original use the command "File > Export > Export unmodified Original" in Photos. This will save a copy of the original outside of Photos. To convince yourself, that the originals are there, select the Photos Library, ctrl-click it or right-click it. Select the command "Show Package Contents". A window will open, showing you the parts of the library. Just look, do not change anything. You should be seeing a sub folder named "Masters", with subfolders organized by the year > month > day of import, containing the original image files. You should not try to access your originals this way, however. Use Photos to access your images.

Are my photos already automatically imported in the photos library tab or do I need to import them?

You will only see photos in Photos that you decide to import. It will not just collect each and every image file on your Mac.

If you are using iCloud Photos Library, all photos you are importing on other devices with iCloud Photos Library will appear automatically in your Photos Library.

To access your photos you use the different views and search tools provided by Photos or the Media Browser, when you want to use the photos in different applications.
