I have not used iCloud effectively. I really do not understand how to access it, what sort of files or data can be stored there, and if I use this macbook to put data onto iCloud, am I only able to use this macbook to retrieve that data. I am looking to find and locate a space where I can put data and share it with other Apple devices I own. Is the iCloud that place, can I access data put there by one device and using another device have access to it?

Please help this novice with iCloud do's and don'ts and/or how to use it. Thank you for taking time to help!

On a Mac iCloud can be accessed through the iCloud Drive folder in Finder, or indirectly through any of the Apps that store data in iCloud directly, such as Notes, Reminders, Photos (if iCloud Photos is turned on), iTunes (If you are subscribed to Apple Music or iTunes Match and have iCloud Music Library turned on). Data in these Apps is synced to iCloud if the options are turned on in System Preferences->iCloud. So anything in those Apps is assumed to also exist in iCloud.

iCloud Drive will show all folders and files stored in iCloud Drive directly. But you cannot directly see things stored by the previously mentioned Apps through the iCloud Drive folder. Only through each App.

You can also access iCloud Drive from any computer by using a browser to go to the iCloud.com website and logging in with the Apple ID you use on your Mac. On the iCloud Website, you can use the different web Apps (Files, Photos, Notes, Reminders, Calendar) to access the different data.

By this same token, so you can log in to iCloud in Settings of an iPhone or iPad with that Apple ID and access that content too in the relevant Apps.
