Missing "X" to close tab in Mojave

After a new page is opened, there is no "x" in the upper left to close the window.

This just started happening.

I am sure the top sites icon used to be in the upper left corner of the tab bar.

Now it is in the favorites bar and I cannot move it or "pin it" into the tab bar.

If there is more than one page opened, then the "x" is available on the pages until

I am down to one page, then no "x" to close page.

I hope this is not too confusing and if anyone can offer some advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

M

Everything you describe is normal in the current version of Safari. If there is only one tab open and you want to close it, you can use File Menu > Close Window, command W, or click the red dot at the left end of the address bar.
