I installed a USB 3.0 external solid state hard drive on my 27" 2012
iMac with a clean copy of Catalina. The previously internal hard drive
has not been touched. I wanted to install a SSD w/o taking apart the
iMac. Sometimes when it goes to its screen saver it freezes up.
What might be causing the freezing? Catalina itself or something else?

I'm running several computers with external USB 3 SSDs and I'm having zero problems. Screen savers are nice and fun but not really necessary. I'd switch screensavers and see if the problem stops.

I agree 100% with dwb.
IMHO ScreenSaver are eye candy that do nothing but consume precious resources.
So personally, I use Hot Corner Sleep or let the Display Auto Sleep when I leave my Mac's.
