Deleting 'archive' without deleting emails

If I delete all the emails in my 'Archive', will it delete emails in the rest of my inbox/folders? I have a recollection of deleting emails in my Archive before and emails in my inbox being deleted.

If it's gMail do not delete Archives, that could hold everything.

If I delete all my archieved emails will it delete all my emails in my inbox? I have over 4,000 emails in the archives of my Mail. I want to delete all the archived ones (or at least I think I do) without deleting the newer emails that I have in my inbox or various smart inboxes. Can I do this without doing the latter? In Mail, if I delete my archived emails, have I lost them forever? Yesterday I tried to make room in Mail by deleting my archived emails. I checked my Inbox folder to see if they were deleted from there as well, and as far as I could tell, they were not. Today I once again checked my Inbox folder and they had disappeared. Are they gone for good?
