I have an iMac running Catalina. When I log into my iMac, the desktop with all its icons appears. However, when I open additional screens, these are completely black with no icons. How can I open multiple screens with the desktop them and icons on every one.

Yes, Please see attached. I also attach a screenshot of the desktop with all the icons etc. What is happening is that the usual desktop appears when I request it but after I close the items I'm working on, it changes into a black screen and is quite useless. Then I have to close the screen and open another one.
I did a search on the internet and found someone who has a solution for the black screen. This is what he said, black screen on your computer monitor and it's your backlight which is broken and need to be replaced with a new backlight.
Hmmm, does the external show in Sys Prefs>Displays?
Oh, is this just one screen on your iMac?
Sys Prefs>Mission Control, uncheck the top 4 boxes.
Please clarify, is this different Monitors or what are these screens you're opening & are you opening them in Full Screen mode?
On a screen with no icons try Control+CMD+f keys.
These are additional screens on my iMac. I want to see every screen with the usual desktop image and icons on every scree
